Steve Warner introduced Gina Clyde, program director for Bright Horizons of Norfolk.
She stated that they have a 24 hour crisis line with a local telephone number (379-3798).
Bright Horizons is dedicated to the elimination of violence against women, men and children through empowerment, education, social action, and support services.
The Norfolk Bright Horizon group services Holt, Boyd, Antelope, Knox, Madison, Pierce and Stanton counties, with a satellite office in O’Neill.

Lori Taylor of Christ is King Sudz group spoke of the group’s trips to India.
Seven years ago a group saw special needs in education for the lowest cast group in India ( Dalit group). Within 4 months they had raised $23,000 to build a school for the Dalit group. The school now has over 700 students and is overcrowded. The Sudz group is supporting an addition to the school.
Many of the local churches have members who visit India and help the schools for the Dalit class.

Ron Skiff introduced Kary Pfeil, area manager for the Head Start Program.
The head Start Program is a free pre-school (four hours per day) program for children of families that qualify for the program.
Basic Mathematics, science and phonics are taught and some need assistance in learning English.
Locally, they have four classrooms, 20 children in each classroom. They have a waiting list and co-operate with the Public Schools which also has a pre-school program.

Warren Reimer introduced Eric Schoh, Athletic Director at Wayne State College. He spoke of the reconstruction of the football stadium and the many facilities located in it.
Many Scholarships of different degrees are offered. This year they will award almost $600,000 in scholarships to deserving athletes in all of their 15 sports.
Wayne State College athletes have a 3.0+ grade point average.
Many students wish to walk on, but many of the programs need to limit the number of walkon that are accepted.

Mike Noelle introduced Roger Brummels who spoke and showed pictures of the May 27, 1948 Chicago Lumber Co. fire, which burned down the north side of Norfolk Avenue between 5th and 6th street.
In 1976 all Chicago Lumber Companies changed their name to Century Lumber.

Merlin Milander introduced Madison County Commissioner, Jerry McCallum.
Mr. McCallum stated that it is very important for a commissioner to understand the county budget. Madison County keeps 23% in reserve and the law states you cannot have more than 28% in reserve. Even in a downturn of income, government is still requested to do at least the same essential duties.
He supports the Elkhorn Valley Economic Development program to help keep and bring back our young people by attracting (more)

Tony Maxey introduced Larry Arens, NPPD operations manager, who spoke on the new building program for NPPD on east Omaha avenue. The building will have space for 93 employees, 50 vehicles, trailers and equipment. Many questions were answered on windturbine costs and kilowatt hours on each turbine. There will be an open house in the fall.
The Morning Kiwanis Outstanding Student Banquet will be Wednesday, May 19 at the Lifelong Learning Center.

Norfolk Fire Marshall, Terry Zwiebel, spoke on the Norfolk fire code for safe homes. Approximately 3500 persons die in the United States each year from fire or smoke inhalation. When smoke detectors were required, deaths went down from fire and smoke inhalation.
A March 2009 code says all new homes need to have a fire sprinkler in all areas of the home that are habited.
Mike Flood will be the speaker for the Outstanding Student Banquet May 19.

Jack Rother who is with Olsen, Goeken & Associates L.L.C., spoke about the basics of a complete financial profile. Discussed were: when to buy or sell, retirement planning, tax, protection and estate planning.

Mark Hall introduced Jim Sinek. Jim is a charter member of Little League Baseball and he spoke of its Norfolk Charter which will begin this year.
Over 340 children (ages 7-14) have signed up. It will replace the City Recreation Baseball Program for ages 7-14. Registration fee is $10. Training for coaches, umpires, players and parents is provided. The organization is looking for team sponsors.
Skill days are being organized so that teams can be evenly divided.

Russ Whitmore introduced Russ Wilcox, who spoke about the new proposed Chamber of Commerce building. The building is scheduled to be completed June 2, 2011.
The Chamber is in need of a good place to bring prospects to the City.
The plan is to place all of the local economical development programs under one roof. The building will be one of three Green (Energy Free) certified buildings in the United States.

Gretchen Forsell introduced Dr. Ruth Macnamara, Director of the new College of Nursing and Jackie Smith, Student Coordinator and Recruiter for the Nursing College. Northeast Community College will be the fifth college of nursing in Nebraska. There is a shortage of nurses across the nation. Nursing students begin August 23.
Gretchen Forsell announced the Northeast Nebraska Science Fair will be held on Monday, March 15 at the NECC gym. Volunteers are needed.

Russ Whitmore introduced Scott Adams who is employed by the State of Nebraska’s five county local area Boys and Girls Home for foster parents.
He stated that the child’s point of view of foster care is “someone is coming to take me away from my parents”. The State has control and attempts to find relatives or friends who can take the children. The goal is to get the children back to their parents. Mark Hall reported that a Norfolk Earth Day 2010 cleanup is planned for April 24, 9:00 – 12:00 A.M. The day will be partnering the Chamber’s Green Council, Keep Norfolk Beautiful, Northfork Riverfront Development Project, Norfolk Tree Advisory Board and other groups.
The goals are to clean up along the riverfront area, expose people to the riverfront, educate on recycling and natural resources and having fun serving Norfolk

Warren Reimer introduced Mike Flood, our local state representative, who spoke on the many activities of the state legislature. He stated that the biggest problem the state legislature is running into is cutting the budget, sorting out where it can be cut and what should not be cut. He is working to secure the opening of the Nursing College here next year.
The Safe Haven law was corrected, but still being studied. They changed the rules for childrens’ elegibility for medicare. (more)

Mike Noelle introduced Tracy Olson and Michelle Lawson from the Wesley Center Crisis Nursery. They stated that the pipeline workers’ wives helped with many projects for the Center. The pipeline company and workers donated $3,000 to the Center.
The Wesley Center purchased the building at 500 Phillip Avenue, planning for expansion due to overcrowded conditions.

Guests present were new member Tiffany Pokorny, and a prospective new member Sarah Abler.
Tony Maxey introduced Dennis Houston, Chamber of Commerce president.
Mr. Houston stated that the pipeline crew will be leaving this Friday. Also, the Chamber of Commerce has a goal of building a new Chamber building on the corner of Norfolk Avenue and Seventh Street.

Merlin Milander introduced Sister Kevin Hermsen, President of Northeast Nebraska Humane Society. Sister Hermsen stated that the Humane Society is planning to build a 6,000 square foot animal shelter north of Norfolk.
Norfolk Police pick up about 2500 animals a year. The present animal shelter has room for only 25. Many businesses and veterinarians in the area (more)

Steve Sothan, a member of the Norfolk “Collecting Leaders in the Community” organization (CLIC) was introduced.
Steve is the CLIC representative for the Norfolk U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. The program is seeking places to have drop off boxes the day after Thanksgiving and to be picked up December 18, when the toys will be collected and prepared as gifts.

Darrell Jorgenson introduced Chris Amundson, owner, editor and publisher of Nebraska Life magazine. Chris was born and raised in Norfolk and after college he worked for Nebraska Life in Omaha and Hartington. He and his wife purchased Nebraska Life magazine in 2005 and moved it to Norfolk.
Writers and photographers from around the state contribute to make the publication one of Nebraska’s best resources for travel and entertainment information. Nebraska Life also explores the (more)

Today At Kiwanis 6-24-2009 - We had a very interesting meeting today. Dr. Marlene Uhing, Superintendent of Public Schools presented our program on Norfolk Public School system and it's finances. Club planning on having or Fire Truck in the 4th of July parade. Hy Vee has rented our concession trailer to use at Fireworks at Skyview. Next week will be our last planning session for our committees to finish out their year.

Today At Kiwanis 3-5-2008 We had a very good meeting today. Arranging an inter-club to Mid Year Conference. We are also arranging an inter-club to transfer the Traveling Bell to another club in our division. Our program was given by Sherry Dinkel and Judith Otten on Dressing for Life. It was announced that we would have another work day at SMILE on May 3rd.

We had a very busy agenda today. We presented our Outstanding Teacher of the year award to James Jurchen of Lutheran High Northeast, where he is the director of Music and Information Technology. Today At Kiwanis 4-4-07 Today club was visited by Lt.Governor George Phelps. He presented Club with Distinguished Club Award for 2005-2006. He Presented Past President Mark Hall with Distinguished President Award for 2005-2006. He also presented Terry A. Hirsch with Outstanding Secretary Award for 2005-2006. Great meeting to end the year. We had to returning guest, Cate Fauss and Chris Hilkemann; they both turned in applications to join club. It is a great thing to watch our club grow. We had our weekly report on bloodmobile, and everything went fine there. Activity for the year of 2006 was completed. Our next big activity is our yearly fundraiser, in January.

Great meeting today. Getting into our busy time of the year. Since our last meeting we were involved in Norfolk Christmas Parade. We were honored by having Santa Claus ride on our Fire Truck. Thursday December 7th we will have a Christmas party for the children in Headstart program. We will provide treats and a visit from Santa for the children. Today we were honored with a visit from Kiwanis District Governor Dave Hessman and Lt. Governor George Phelps. Governor Dave gave us a brief talk on his goals for the District this year. Had a prospective member attend the meeting. It looks as if he will join. Club members will participate in the Christmas parade this year. We will be giving Santa a ride on Club Firetruck.

Today we saw the return of Warren Reimer. He has not been able to attend many meetings due to business conflicts, but hopefully now he can be at the meetings a little more often. 7 members planning to go to Wayne next week and visit with the Kiwanis Governor on his official visit. Today we had a special visit from Lt. Gov. George Phelps. He came to invite our Club to the Governor visit in Wayne on the 21st of November. He also announced that the Governor would make a special visit to our club on the 22nd of November.
Our program today was Carolyn Cheney and her associates. They represent Pawsup Pet Therapy. They use dogs as therapy treatment for people in nursing homes and hospitals. They also help the Red Cross in times of need.

Today we were happy to see Bob Lindsteadt back from his bypass surgery. Bob is doing very well. We had no new guest today. We discussed our involvement with the purchasing of Christmas Presents for needy children.
Our program today was Brooke Hay. She spoke on the AGAPE Pregnancy Care Center. She gave us an update on the new facility, and their current needs.

Had a very nice meeting today. Inducted Gretchen Forsell & Dewey Reimer into the club as new members. Gretchen also presented club with check for $2400.00 to help us purchase backpacks for Foster children. The Christmas party for the Headstart children will be 12-7-06.
Our speaker today was John Dinkel. He spoke on the concerned citizens group in Norfolk, and it's objectives.

Today was the first official working meeting of the New Kiwanis Year. New President Mike Noelle reported on events at last weeks Board Meeting. Club has purchased new tapes for the Dial-A-Story at the library. They should be in use in a couple of weeks.
Former member and Past President Craig Schmidt visited our club today. He was in town on business.
All committees met today to plan next years activities. Next year should be another great year.

Today a New Year started for us. All new officers were installed today by Lt. Governor George Phelps from Wayne, NE. All awards were given out for last year's accomplishments. Dennis Mitchell was named Kiwanian of the year. 50% of our members had perfect attendance for last year.

Club getting ready for a busy week in 2 weeks. We will participate in LaVitsef Parade, our Outstanding Student Banquet, and we will have our concession trailer out on the day of the parade. Last week 4 members of our club went to Pierce, NE to visit the Kiwanis Club there.
Our program was presented by Doug & Cheryl Dekker. They told about their trip to New York City 5 years ago to help with the 911 disaster.

Meeting today was well attended by the members. We had no visitors today. Usual business was conducted. The high point during the business session, was announced by Terry Hirsch, that Gretchen Forsell, with Northern Nebraska AHEC, has offered to support our Backpacks for the Fosters Children of the Crisis Nursery. AHEC will donate $2400.00. That will help complete that project for the year.

Not a lot going on this last week. There will be a lot of things in the works for next week. Work at the blood mobile going well every week. On Wednesday 8-30-06 John Hay will be in charge of a group of Kiwanians to help recruit new Key Club members at Norfolk High School. John Burns has planned a 5th Wednesday Trip to the Art Center. At today's meeting the members attending the District Convention reported on all of the happenings throughout the District. Terry Hirsch reported on Foundation News. The Foundation is still looking for a major activity to replace PTK. Dennis Mitchell was named Kiwanian of the 3rd Quarter. On the upcoming 5th Wednesday we will go to art center and tour. The program today had to cancel, so we just had general discussions.

Our Club was visited today by 2 members of the Pierce Kiwanis Club; they were Connie Otto and Pam Flesner. They told about the activities in their club. We had report on Board of Directors meeting last Thursday. It was announced that Terry Hirsch had acquired a grant of $1000.00 from Wal-Mart to help with the "Read To Your Bunny" program. This program distributes books to all of the new mothers when they leave the hospital to read to their newborns.

At today's meeting Bob Pratt reported on having fire truck in Tilden parade. Downtown Coffee Company will use concession trailer this weekend at Bike Race. New club T-shirts are in and the look very nice.
Joe Mtika had the program today. He spoke on the children of Malawi. Joe is from Malawi and had a very interesting presentation.

Great meeting today. Dewey Reimer returned for another visit, to announce that he would be rejoining our club. Dennis Mitchell was presented an appreciation award, for his work on the concession trailer.
Our speaker today was Steve McNally, noon club President Elect. He has just returned from the International convention in Canada. He gave a very informative talk on the convention.

Today's guest was Dewey Reimer. He was a former member and is possibly going to rejoin. We discussed are passed activities with the 4th of July parade and the concession stand, everything went well at both. We will be sending 4 members to the District convention in Kearney in August. We had one guest at our meeting today. Gary Wisnieski is moving back into the area, and he stopped in to visit our club. We arranged for all of the people for tonights work project at Bright Horizon.
The lettering on the Concession Trailer will be complete on Thursday June 29th. You can view finished pictures on Photo Album Page. This will be the big weekend for it, with HyVee using it at Big Bang Boom and us using it at, and in the 4th of July parade.

Had no new guests today. Members discussed 3 upcoming projects. On June 28th we will rebuild fence at Bright Horizon Shelter, and on July 4th we will operate our new concession stand at Memorial Field before the parade, and then have the Fire Truck in the Parade.
Bob Pratt gave the program on his mission trip to Jamaica.
New Concession trailer was on display outside for everyone to see.

We had a visit from Bob Marshall Kiwanis Noon Club President and Dan Fuerhoff Noon Club Sectetary.
Wishing wells were collected and last quarters receipts were good. The club decided to meet on July 5th, and to participate in the 4th of July Parade.
Concession Trailer is almost complete and will be out and running by July 1st. It was decided that when available any local Kiwanis clubs could rent trailer for $50.00 a day, and any approved private party could (more)

At this weeks meeting The Lt. Governor Merlin Milander announced that they had a very successful Training cession for next year’s officers last Saturday. Training was done by Everett Breach, are Division 18 trainer.

At todays meeting Tim Kassimeier, of Norfolk Catholic High School, was awarded Norfolk Morning Kiwanis Teacher of the Year. A picture and Bio has been posted on the photo page. A proposal for a community project was presented by Michael Hall of Norfolk. He is a boy scout who is working on attaining hes Eagle Badge. His project consists of repairing and painting the fence around the Bright Horizon shelter in Norfolk. The Kiwanis club will assist him with this (more)

On 5-17-06 at the regular meeeting of the Norfolk Morning Kiwanis, Courtney Janssen, was awarded the clubs outstanding youth in Agriculture Award. At the same meeting Terry Hirsch and Bob Pratt were awarded co-kiwanians of the 2nd quarter, for their work on the club fundraiser, microwave popcorn. Pictures are posted on photo page.

On Saturday May 6th a group of kiwanis members and a member from the Knights of Columbus went to S.M.I.L.E. in Battle Creek, NE to do a work project. The volunteers put up a 4 wire electric fence for the horses. The work project is probably 80% completed. A little more fence needs to be done as well as running a waterline for the horses. Pictures are posted on this site from that project.

FLASH Norfolk Morning Kiwanis has taken on a new fund raising project. They have purchased a concession trailer. This trailer will be seen at upcoming local events. Nebraska/Iowa District Goveror, Ray Ward, visited Division 18 clubs in Norfolk,NE. 31 members attended the banquet Friday April 21st. A good time was had by all.
